Hey all, I know this has been done to death by everyone who knows just the slightest bit about hockey, but thought I'd get my picks on the record! Eastern Conference #1 Buffalo Sabres vs. #8 New York Islanders Buffalo should make short work of the Islanders. The Isles showed great grit and determination in making the playoffs but they did it b...

Predictions

With the playoffs underway, I would love to hear some of your guy's predictions. Here are mine: Buffalo Sabers vs. New York islanders I feel the Islanders will pull it out, mainly because of Dubielewicz, but it's hard to go against the Sabers. Sorry Buffalo fans but I got to go with the Islanders. New York in 7 New Jersey Devils vs Tampa Bay Lightning...

WHAT A GAME!!!

Posted Thursday | Comments 3
So, just got home from the 4OT thriller at the garage tonight, WHAT A GAME. I mean, they stopped selling beer after the 2nd intermission, so I wound up paying $4 bucks for Sprite, but that's all good. Go Canucks Go... and chants of TTTUUURRCCOOO filled the evening excitement as I basically lost my voice and drank ice cubes for 2 OT's. Skytrain was reasonable on the way ...

Day Three -- What now?

Posted Friday | Comments 0
Canucks vs. Dallas -- I was there in Game 1. Dallas pressed hard, Luongo saved the day, but the Canucks did take some bad penalties and looked out of sorts at times. Game 1 jitters? Considering we've played 2 games already now, no more jitters left. The latter OT periods definitely favoured the Canucks. I don't think Dallas can play any better. The Canucks sur...
Van-Dal: 2-1 Van leads. Good under bet opportunities here for handicappers after game 1. Still say Vancouver will just get it done and win out from here. Ana-Min: 3-0 Ducks. Wow, really didn't see this coming and I'm not sure why I don't respect the Ducks team play more. In any case, now it's just a matter of if the Wild can make themselves look respectable. Off-season,...
Although the Sabres don't play tonight, there are still 5 games that should be very interesting. Atlanta/NYR - Rangers lead series 2-0 Atlanta must win this game to have any chance. They already gave up both of their home games to start the series. It Atlanta can play well on the road for the next 2 games, they could have a shot at winning. However, I ...

Buffalo will sweep the Rangers

Rangers look so disinterested tonight... Anyways, they don't have enough defensemen to contain the Sabres. I think only the Senators can match. I hope the Rangers win a few games, that way more Sabres players can get more points for my pool :)

Let me like you San Jose!

Well another disappointing result for the Sharks. When will I be able to get on board with this team and really consider them a contender? This coming from a Habs fan with obviously no vested interest in this years Stanley Cup Playoffs, for obvious reasons. The Sharks seemingly had the goods to make an extended run, solid defense, good goaltending, #2 PP unit and a number...

Well congratulations to all the qualified for the playoffs. As fans this is our favorite time of the year. Forget March Madness. This is the real fun tournament in the spring! Some final analysis on the season and the unbalanced schedule. Previously I wrote about a plan to play a balanced schedule with 86 total games. 4 (2 home, 2 away) against all teams in the con...

Gosh, it gets tedious to read the hockey reports in the Sporting News. The title of a current epistle is Ovechkin falling flat in playoff debut. Are we watching the same games? Are we reading the same stat sheets? Do the Flyers get no credit for executing well? Frankly, this type of reportage is more an indictment of the flawed mentality prevailing in ...

Blues Playoff Picture

Posted Sunday | Comments 0
As of right now the Blues have a chance to be in the 8th spot come late Tuesday night. Tonight: Need the Ducks to lose. Monday: Need the Preds to lose Tuesday: Need to win. Need the Wild to lose Wednesday: Need the Ducks to beat the Sexual Predators. If the Ducks win tonight this game makes it impossible for us to keep the 8th spot. The NHL is ridiculousl...
As we have moved through the season, I've had an eye toward the playoffs with my Flyers and have noticed a few shortcomings which I felt would prevent them from being able to get out of the conference to challenge for the Stanley Cup to be real contenders; not pretenders as they are now. Don't get me wrong. Coming off of a season where the home team couldn't eve...

Predicting the Playoffs - NOW!

Posted Thursday | Comments 0
This time of year everyone is ranking teams and trying to handicap the most productive teams in the playoffs. I have been watching a stat that might be as good an indicator as any. Here I will rank the teams in each conference based on goal differential. This stat is a good indicator because it shows how many easy games a team has had during the season. Too many easy g...

Playoff Predictions!

TSR makes our first round predictions and I'm thinking I might have been hopped up on something when I made mine. I think a couple of first round upsets are in order in the east. Maybe I'm way off, but this is more fun! http://www.thesportsroundup.com/2011/04/first-round-nhl-playoff-predictions.html#more Newman twitter.com/TSRNewman

Needs To Be Said

I write this article, as an unbiased fan. I write this, as someone who loves the sport of hockey. This first-round of the 2011 playoffs has been exciting, and nothing but dull. 6 of the 8 playoff series have gone at least 6 games. However, there is something amiss in the NHL. I plan on using 3 examples in this situation. First: Game 3 of the Vancouver vs Chicago se...

Round 1 Playoff Preview

Now that my team has been eliminated from the playoffs (as predicted) I can look at the playoffs objectively. Here's my take on the quarterfinal match ups in this years NHL playoffs. I'm writing on this site, click on the link below to read the whole article. http://betweenthebenches.com/?p=1103
Once again, with just under a minute remaining in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals Series between the top seeded New York Rangers and eighth seeded Ottawa Senators, we had some controversy in a game which already included a few questionable calls on both sides. The Rangers were leading the Senators 3-1 when agitator Chris Neil (who faked being injured jus...
What makes a Cup Champion? It's no longer what one may think. Just because someone has a super star, or 1 All-Star caliber line doesn't guarantee a Cup. http://betweenthebenches.com/?p=1708

Game Over

Posted Friday | Comments 0
How many times have we seen the Buffalo Sabres do what they’ve done this week? The Sabres came up with 3 great wins against the Penguins, Senators, and Devils. They pulled themselves into a great position, having gotten within 4 points of the elusive 8th place seed in the Eastern Conference. Hope, for the fans of Buffalo, had been restored. Heading into Tuesday ni...

Round 1 has officially come to a close, thus inaugurating the annual first wave of NHL Playoff MVP speculation. Undoubtedly, there are those who will claim that it’s simply to early to judge, but we’re pretty sure that even such purists secretly guess-timate as to which first round fire will keep burning. What can we say, we simply can’t help ourselves. With that, he...
Finally, the playoffs are over. Thank goodness. The drudgery! Who cares? Make fun of me if you would like. I was bored to tears after the first round of the playoffs and I didn't watch many games thereafter. I've been bored after the first round of the playoffs for a long time. Truth be told, the three most exciting playoff teams I've ever watched were Toronto, Phi...
Avalanche, Golden Knights and Lightning are extremely strong. Likely end of story. In the first round I predict two upsets. They will be Nashville over Carolina and Montreal over Toronto. Nashville over Carolina will be the result of playoff experience prevailing. Nashville still have some extremely talented players with a ton of playoff experience. Still will go 7 games. ...
